Current ACT sections and what each one tests.

The current ACT core sections are English, Mathematics, and Reading. Science is optional in the current format, and Writing is an optional essay. Do not build a plan that treats Science as mandatory unless your test registration includes it.

Section overview

  • English: 50 questions in 35 minutes.
  • Mathematics: 45 questions in 50 minutes.
  • Reading: 36 questions in 40 minutes.
  • Optional Science: 40 questions in 40 minutes.
  • Optional Writing: one essay in 40 minutes.

After reviewing the sections, use the ACT Practice Test and record results by section. For timing pressure, use the ACT format and timing page.
